Early in 2014 the governemnt announced it’s intention to introduce a register of contractors. It came into effect on 1st March 2014. GPD is listed on the CIRI register.
The board of CIRI is made up of various representatives from government and the industry.
The purpose of the register is to distinguish between legitimate construction companies / sole traders from those who have given, or may give, the industry a bad name.
It will provide a mechanism to clients and to the public to view the credentials of registered construction companies. It is also linked to the new building control (Amendment) regulations 2014 which provide for the appointment of competent contractors with provision being made to include the members CIRI registered number on the statutory commencement notices for lodgement with the Building Control Authorities on or after 1st March 2014. To be on the CIRI register, competent construction companies, sole traders and builders must comply with the building regulations and an industry code of ethics, they must prove their tax compliance and they must meet the health and safety regulations relating to the construction industry and have a track record of competence and experience.
It is intended by the government that CIRI will be put on a statutory footing in 2015.
In common with other professional institutions and bodies, continual professional development (CPD) will be a significant factor for all CIRI registered companies, and that is an area that has recently been finalised.
